PV X WSL: Brisa Hennesy Q&A

PSA: Pura Vida is the presenting partner of the World Surf League Rising Tides program! We’ve teamed up with the World Surf League to bring the waves to you with our WSL Mixed Original Bracelet and the WSL Mixed Mini Braid Anklet 🌊. The upcoming WSL x Pura Vida bracelet ties back to WSL's We Are One Ocean campaign, which spotlights sustainability and ocean protection 🐬

To celebrate, we sat down with PV sponsored female surfer Brisa Hennessy to find out what inspires her 🤗

Costa Rican surfer Brisa moved to Hawaii when she was just nine years old to pursue a professional surfing career, and hasn’t looked back since! "I'm really excited to join the Pura Vida Family," said Brisa Hennessy. "I love what they are doing with communities, the sparkle they give to women around the world, and their true essence and beauty of the pura vida, pure living lifestyle. I'm excited to bring that message around the world with them!” 🤙🏽

Check out our convo with Brisa below:

PV: How old are you? At what age did you start to surf?
Brisa: I am 22 and I started surfing when I was around 3.

PV: What made you decide to start surfing professionally?
Brisa: I don’t think there was a definitive moment where I decided. Surfing was already such a big part of my life, and as I continued through the different steps of my journey, the desire and motivation to surf evolved and blossomed more and more as my dream became a reality.

PV: What is your work regime?
Brisa: My work regime is constantly changing, but I would say my hours revolve around the surf forecast (haha!). But a typical day for me would consist of breathing/stretching in the morning, going for a long surf, finding some time to be in the kitchen, and then doing some sort of training in the afternoon.

PV: Who is your favorite sports hero?
Brisa: Rell Sunn, who was not only a pioneer for women's surfing, but also had a gracious heart and so much love for the community and others, which is what truly inspires me. She was the greatest water woman, and had an undeniable special connection to the ocean.

PV: What is your favorite food to eat the night before a big competition?
Brisa: My mama’s sushi bowl with my favorite superpower energy food - sweet potatoes!

PV: What is/was your favorite place to compete?
Brisa: I got to compete at Lakey Peak, Indonesia for the International Grom Search. It was firing for the contest, a perfect right and left peak, and to this day I have dreams about that place!

PV: What one word describes you?
Brisa: Warmhearted.

PV: What mental tool do you use under pressure?
Brisa: Definitely breathing! It always takes me back to the present moment.

PV: What do you do to relax in your downtime?
Brisa: Cooking and being in the kitchen is definitely my therapy – it calms my mind. I love being creative and feeding the people I love.

PV: Tell us about your greatest achievement.
Brisa: Going to the Olympics was a very special one for me. It was an honor to represent Costa Rica and be a part of surfing in the Olympics for the first time in history. It definitely gave me a new love for country/sport, and a greater sense of purpose for what I do. I will carry that with me forever.
